Supkopp
Svartbränd
A small black-burnt earthenware soup cup. The cup is made of clay and burnt black in an earth mile, just like the Vikings made their pottery. The black firing gives a somewhat fiery and very glossy black color, reminiscent of graphite. The method began to be used in Scandinavia during the Viking Age and involves making a pit in the ground where you put your dried pottery together with organic material, e.g. grass. Then everything is covered with soil so that it becomes airtight. After that, you fire on the outside of the earth pile until you reach a temperature of around 800-900 degrees. The ceramics are burned together with the grass as charcoal. The resulting gases color the ceramics black.
